This site is dedicated to the memory of Isaac W. Hopkins, beloved father, grandfather, friend, and mentor.

His wish was that ihopkins.com serve as a portal for education.

Strength and Courage

Mr. Isaac W. Hopkins, a civil rights activist and a national team advocate for disability rights had his genesis in his role as founder and President of the Ocean County Chapter of NAACP in 1958. Before that, Hopkins served as Vice President of Local 439, United Rubber Workers of America from 1952 to 1954.

Hopkins was employed as cottage officer and area supervisor for the New Jersey State Training School where he was instrumental in initiating tutorial and mentor programs for juvenile inmates with learning disabilities. This effort was coordinated with the Rutgers University outreach programs. During his tenure as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the New Jersey State Training School, he also served as Chair of the local American Legion Post (1968 - 1969). Securing facilities for a Head Start program for migrant workers and rural children was one of his many accomplishments in that role.

Isaac served in many capacities that focused on disadvantaged and disabled youth that included Chairman of the Howard University Research and Training Center for Access to Rehabilitation and Economics Committee. Ike was the former Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services, and a member of the New Jersey University of Medicine and Dentistry Institutional Review Board. In 2006, he was appointed Community Research Advocate for the Office of Human Resources Protection (OHRP) located in Rockville, Maryland.

Isaac Hopkins initiated a collaborative effort with the New Jersey University of Medicine and Dentistry to provide students with chronic disabilities with education and technical expertise for future employment. He served as a consultant for the Newark Public School. Mr. Hopkins is currently serving as a consultant to a Faith-Based Health and Disability Initiative supported by the Newark/North Jersey Committee of Black Clergy.

Hopkins, facilitator and panelist, gained worldwide experience traveling to the former Soviet Union, China, Hong Kong, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Canada.

A native of New Jersey, Hopkins earned his undergraduate degree from Shaw University, North Carolina. Mr. Hopkins received specialized training in criminal justice and drug education in prestigious institutions such as George Washington University, John Jay College, Seton Hall University, University of Southwest Texas, University of Penn State, and Howard University.
